Do you know that the skin is our biggest organ? For this reason, we have to take special care and nurture it. While everything we put on the skin goes directly into the subcutaneous tissue and then into the blood. So you should not give on it anything you would not want to eat.
For our skin to shine in the best light, we must take care of it, feed it, moisten it. We have to get good sleep, eat healthy and balanced meals, and take care of the activity of the whole body.
The skin consists of three main layers: the upper layer called the epidermis, the middle layer called the dermis, and the deeper subcutaneous tissue called the hypodermis.
The epidermis is a layer that we can see and touch. It protects us against the bacterial intrusion, against toxic substances and the loss of fluid. It provides a waterproof barrier and creates our skin tone. We can divide the epidermis into five layers:
- Basal Layer: the deepest layer of the epidermis
- Spinous Cell Layer: keratinocytes form keratin (protein fibers) and create a spindle shape.
- Granular Cell Layer: the cells form hard granules, which, when scrolling upwardly, turn into keratin and lipids.
- Shining Layer: cells lie tightly together and are flat, and the borders between them are blurred.
- Stratum Corneum: the outermost layer of the epidermis. Dead cells peel regularly off the skin. In this layer, there are also pores of the sweat glands and the sebaceous gland.
The dermis is a thick, flexible, firm middle layer of skin. The main structural components of the dermis are collagen* and elastin. It consists of:
- Lower Layer: a deep, thick area that forms a liquid boundary with subcutaneous tissue
- Upper Layer: forms a sharp, wavy border with the epidermis.
Subcutaneous tissue is a deep layer under the dermis. This layer stores energy and ensures the insulation and upholstery of the body. It consists of fat cells, particular collagen fibers that hold together fat cells and blood vessels.
*Collagens are natural proteins that are essential components of connective tissue of the bones, tendons, cartilage, skin, nails, and hair.
Skin Changes With Aging
Due to various factors, the skin begins to produce fewer lipids (fatty acids, ceramides, etc.) and hygroscopic ingredients that protect it from moisture. Effects of physiological aging and some stress can cause dehydration. The skin barrier is damaged, that why becomes fragile and unprotected.
Every skin, regardless of type, necessarily needs moisture. Using a good moisturizing cream, plenty of movement in the fresh air and the consumption of sufficient amounts of water** will help to the health and beauty of the skin.
** Drink at least 2 liters of pure water per day. To get the right amount of water to drink, divide your body weight by 30 and get the required amount (e.g., 60 kg / 30 = 2 liters).
About 25 years of age, we notice that the skin is no longer as flexible as in teenage years. The first signs of the effect of free radicals (these are harmful molecules produced by smoking, exposure to sunshine, stress, etc.) on collagen and elastin (these elements provide flexibility and firmness to the skin). If we want our skin to stay as firm and youthful as possible, we need to use cosmetic products containing antioxidants (such as vitamins A, C, and E).
… In the Mature Years
It may seem to us that, according to the appearance, the skin changes only after 50 or 60 years of the age. But this is not the case. Indeed, during this period, wrinkles, skin sagging, and pigment stains become more noticeable, but most degenerative processes begin already in the third and fourth decade.
The skin is aging due to slow cell growth. The quality of cellular material is getting worse. Metabolism and synthesis are slowed down. That is why nutrient supplies reduce, and blood circulation is not appropriate. In the dermis is reduced the production of collagen and elastin. Their elasticity is even worse. The creation of hyaluronic and chondroitin acids is not big enough. Their role is to bind moisture and keep it in the skin as well as in joints, eyes, and other organs. The number of sebaceous and sweat glands, as well as their excretions, is reduced. As a result, the skin is under-protective. Because of all these factors, it becomes thin and dry. It tightens and itching, wrinkles are forming, and the lines of the face changes.
Sunlight, wind, cleaners, contacts with chemicals, stress, alcohol, unbalanced diet, sunbathing in tanning beds, living environment, and wrong or insufficient care are also contributing to the skin aging. Therefore, the skin must be nourished throughout life so that it will look nurtured in mature years. We need to protect it against UV radiation and physical and chemical injuries.
For A Beauty It Is Necessary To Get A Big Dose Of Sleep
The best anti-aging therapy is sleep. While we are sleeping, our body is rapidly renewing. According to the latest research, skin cells recover, the fastest, half an hour before midnight. At that time, they are replacing eight times faster than during the day.
Interestingly, sleep is a very productive process. Nevertheless, we rest in sleep. Sleep keeps us young and beautifies us.
Sleeping is one of the most natural, pure, beneficial, effective medicines for the whole body. We should sleep 8 hours at night and also during the day, half to one hour. Sleep has a beneficial effect on:
- good feeling,
- good memory,
- immune system,
- maintenance of body weight,
- good sex.
Food For Beautiful And Healthy Skin
When we are talking about skin care, we usually think of external care. Have you ever felt that it is necessary to nourish it from the inside? For the beauty and health of the skin, food plays a significant role. The surface shows to the world, what is happening in our body. Let us see which vitamins are the key to healthy skin and where to find them.
Fat-soluble (lipophilic) vitamins are A, D, E, and K.
Fat-soluble vitamins are absorbed along with fats in the diet and can be stored in the body’s fatty tissue. They come from plant and animal foods or dietary supplements.
Vitamin A (retinol in foods of animal origin, carotenoids in foods of plant origin) is crucial for skin health. The lack of this vitamin reflects in increased keratinization and peeling. Sources of vitamin A are fish oil, liver, egg yolk, butter, cream, carrots, spinach, papaya, kale, mango, rhubarb, tomato, and other fruits and vegetables.
Vitamin C (ascorbic acid) plays an essential role in the synthesis of collagen. Protects cells against oxidative stress and restores vitamin E in the body. If vitamin C is lacking, our wounds are slowly healing. Vitamin C is in fruits and vegetables. Most are in blackcurrant, brussels sprouts, kiwi, cauliflower, strawberries, lemons, spinach, goji strawberries, and others.
Vitamin E (tocopherols) protects the cells against oxidative stress. Reduces UV damage, accelerates skin regeneration, and increases its moisture. The sources of this vitamin are wheat germ oil and other selected oils. Seeds and nuts also contain some vitamin E.
Water soluble (hydrophilic) are vitamins C, B complex, and H.
Water–soluble vitamins are carried to the body’s tissues but are not stored in the body. They are in plant and animal foods or dietary supplements, and we must take them daily. Vitamin C and members of the vitamin B complex are water–soluble.
Vitamin B3 (niacin) takes care of the excellent barrier function of the skin. We can find this vitamin in the poultry, beef, beer yeast, fish. Small amounts of vitamin B3 are also in red peppers, pumpkins, peanut butter, whole grains, dried plums.
Vitamin B5 (pantothenic acid) acts anti-inflammatory and regenerative. The richest sources of this vitamin are liver, meat, and fish, milk, eggs, avocados, peas, yogurt, whole grains, and legumes.
Aloe vera And Skin Care
An extremely effective skin moisturizing agent is aloe vera. Its strength lies in the fact that penetrates the deepest layers of the skin. It transfers nutrients and moisture through the seven layers of the skin. With the help of polysaccharides, it creates protection on the surface. Which prevents drying of the skin. People with dry skin are happy to know that aloe vera is on their side. It is very suitable for sensitive skin, as it contains antihistamines and natural antibiotics.
Aloe vera increases (up to 8 times faster than usual) creation of fibroblasts that are responsible for creating collagen. Collagen production helps to fight age spots. Aloe vera helps to keep the skin young at the cellular level.
Aloe vera is used in dermatology to treat many diseases:
- treat excessive secretion of the sebaceous glands,
- fungal infections,
- allergies, etc.

These gradually degrade into amino acids that absorb in the body.
In the food supplement, the collagen complex has already been hydrolyzed in the form of peptides. That provides better absorption. Collagen from marine fish also includes vitamin C, biotin, and ceramide, which preserve the natural state and functioning of the skin.
